What if Enrollment Increases at Skyview?
We discussed the possiblity/probablity of student enrollment increasing at Skyview due to new construction. What steps should we take to take care of this internally?
Assuming that we will have significant enrollment growth over the next few years, how should we react? (assuming that we have existing facilities and there is no boundary adjustment or new portables)
We discussed ranking the following facility options from most to least desireable:
A. Area FTE
Weight Room 1.0
Computer Lab 1.0
Eagle Eye 0.6
Art (2nd Rm) 0.6
CLC Transfer 4.0
Planning Time 5.0
B. Any other ideas?
C. At our 1/18/05, Dept. Hd. Meeting there was no clear rank order priority since any change affects a program. The district is not projecting significant enrollment increase right now but they are not projecting the new housing. This is an issue that needs to be discussed internally to get a feeling for what we would do to get 1.0-2.0 fte of space if necessary. Think it through.

PE Dept - We need our weight room as a class room. From October through April it is used daily. The best thought would be to shift CLC to a smaller school.
Math- Try to maximumize the use of the Art Room and Eagle Eye Room, then try moving CLC (even though we hate to see the program of the CLC student helpers be lost), get a portable, then the other options in no particular order.
We do not want the Weight Room lost nor is losing the Computer Lab a valid idea.
We would also like to know if the district has any enrollment models in the works because of the construction around SJH.
Jim F. here: Some or all of clc to Leota or Timbercrest seems like something of a no brainer. We need space, they have space.
I was wrong, incorrect, mistaken about the FTE that could be recaptured by scheduling classes during teacher planning times. Since we have 5-6 teachers with planning every period then that is 5.0-6.0 fte. That could cover 125ish additional students. (I am changing this on the original posting for the record)
I have talked to Terry and Les the District Demographers and they have published projected enrollment numbers that show significant and continued growth in student enrollment at SJH. I then called Eric Barnum to let him know that we would officially like to open discussions with the district and I e-mailed Dan Vaught and Eric Barnam and the demographers to let them know.
Eric's initial, unofficial response:
a. costs $50,000 to move a portable and we are in a cost cutting time
b. do you have classes scheduled during teacher planning times?
c. what is the official building capacity? (this is whre the real, challening conversations are because building capacity is based on the maximum number of students you could schedule into spaces which raises the issue of weight rooms, computer labs, Eagle Eye/Art, planning time, CLC etc...
John Moen:
The use of any of the spaces will significantly impact the program(s) that are currently in that space, and perhaps necessitate the removal of that program - including the PE portables, Eagle Eye room, computer lab and Art room alike. This has a domino effect within its department and the master schedule.
I think we are all open to the conversation about sharing rooms, but realistically it is difficult solution and will weaken any existing program that tries to share.
The Contained Learning Center is contained and therefore less entwined in the master schedule. It does seem to be the simplest solution to a complex problem. I don't want to de-value the program, simply point out its independence.
