Master Schedule and Staffing for 2005-06
I am starting to collect input into adjustments that we may want to make to our Master Schedule Process this year. Your input is requested and will definitely be considered. It is important to share your input so your Department's needs are well represented.
Initial thoughts:
1. hold back .4 FTE to assure that our staffing is within budget
2. assume an average of 26 students per class (slightly higher for PE depending on how many 9th graders elect to take PE)
3. we will continue to offer only full year PE for 7th and 8th grades
4. if we offer a Basic Skills 9th grade class then we will limit enrollment to 21 students
5. Study Table is $70 per day
6. cap Yearbook and Eagle Eye at 26 students

Not all of us were convinced that the basic skills class is the answer. Most everyone thought that 21 kids was too many. We thought that kids with behavior problems should not be included in that mix. We talked a lot about a system overhaul which would carve out time during the day to run a peer-tutoring/acceleration type program (like Swing Shift). We thought it could help more students and also improve the culture by creating bonds between tutors and peers.
Sorry--I forgot to sign my name on the last comment (Swing Shift type program).
Also, the other issues seemed okay, except increasing class size, of course. We probably wouldn't even have to have the discussion about failing kids if our class sizes could be reduced. --Diane for the English Department
PE Dept - If we hold back .4 have a plan on how to use the .4 if we have the kids for it.
Have a basic skills class. Maybe to get them off to a good start, have them take a two period pe block in the morning where they can imporve work habits
Is the basic skills class in addition to a possible 9th science class for students who need a slower approach? I support it due to the need to work with these failing students in the first year of HS instead of later. Jeanie
Jeanie- would like to see the data from study table. I don't know if the assignments are being completed or not. Students appear to be working, but not sure of follow through or impact to their grades.
