Pay $500 for Color Toner out of General Budget?
We have a color laserprinter in the Technology Lab. (C. Seeley’s classroom) It needs about $500 of toner and parts to continue working. There is no money available in the Exploratory budget and this printer is networked and used by other teachers.
This is not a unique situation. We have other items that create reoccuring, ongoing costs beyond the initial investment that are not individually funded: laser printers, copiers, defibrillator, cellular phones, weight lifting equipment...
Your feelings about purchasing the $500 toner out of general school supply budget?

10 Comments:
We need to know who uses the toner? Does exploratory use the printer solely for its classes, or do other classes use it? If other classes use it, then let's break down the cost by percentage of specific department use.
The ninth grade team has no objections to using $500 for the toner out of the general school budget.

Special Ed. does not have an SJH school budget. We only have about a $2000 budget for all 7 certificated teachers in our department that comes from district. Our department does not use that printer to my knowledge.
The money could and should be used any other place than the color printer-it would be nice to have at least one working computer in each classrom. Save the money and put it with some other money and put it in computers for the classroom.

The color laser printer is being used by many departments on a variety of projects. We don't have a very accurate account of who is using the printer because Chris can't keep track of which student is coming to pick up prints. This is similar to our issue with the copier - not putting in a code to keep track of department budgets.
The printer has been used by:
•8th Grade for bookmarks & lots of westward movement.
•Special Needs - printing out the pictograms used in the severe/profound program.
•Multimedia - Class projects (art to put on the fridge at home)
•Yearbook - Proof prints
•9th Grade Tollerance - Posters
•Breakout - posters, displays
•9th grade Science - various reports
•ASB - Awards, Photos, Sports Teams
Our last toner cartridge was purchased March of 2002 so it has lasted about 2 1/2 years. In it's first year it printed out 1,700 pages. It comes out to be about 5-8 cents per printed page depending on how much ink gets used.
The printer extends projects to a different medium which is able to make a greater impact on kid's lives. If used with dicression, I think it is a valuable and useful tool - just like the photocopiers.

Bret PE Dept - As long as everyone can print to the printer use general funds
maslin...multi-use=general funding. A special "BIG POINTIE HAT AWARD" SHOULD BE GIVEN TO TEACHERS WHO accidently FORGET AND PRINT THEIR progress reports in COLOR. MAYBE CHRIS COULD CREATE A DRIVERS LICENCE.
Which classroom doesn't have a working computer?
Chris, math:
General funding, just like the other toner cartridges for the other laser printers.
